A Campus Built for Collaboration

One of the central ideas behind Apple Park is that the entire campus is available to use as a workplace. The massive Ring Building and its surrounding parkland offer a variety of places to collaborate with others and find inspiration throughout the day.

It took eight miles of curved glass to create the Ring Building. Its 800 floor-to-ceiling glass panels ensure that wherever you are in the building, there’s always a view and a connection to the outside. This feeling is enhanced by the building’s unique natural ventilation system which brings fresh air in through its glass canopies.

Inside the building, teams occupy multiple floors, organized vertically. Custom-designed cantilevered staircases encourage easy interaction among team members across floors, making collaboration a natural part of every day.

Something Worth Discovering

While the Pond at Apple Park was originally sited at the center of the Inner Ring, a decision was made to locate it off to the side — where, in landscape architect Laurie Olin’s words, “it would be better hidden, some place people could discover.”

Tucked into a crescent-shaped hill and surrounded by trees, the Pond is a cherished and serene spot in the Inner Ring where people gather throughout the day for conversation, inspiration, and reflection.

“It would be better hidden — some place people could discover.”
— Laurie Olin, Landscape Architect, Apple Park

The Feeling of a Lakeshore

When Steve Jobs and Laurie Olin spoke about the design for the Pond, they agreed to do something calming — something that would encourage people to go outside, get a change of pace, and feel the stimulus of the natural elements.

Laurie came up with the idea of evoking the feeling of being on a beach, or at the edge of a lakeshore, with water lapping toward you. He designed a shallow pond with a natural stone bottom, with gentle waves emanating from its center, moving toward its perimeter and flowing over.

A Place to Reflect

The Pond is one of the most beloved spots at Apple Park. People come here throughout the day to step away from their work, recharge, and find a moment of stillness in the middle of a busy campus.

Intentionally Hidden

The decision to tuck the Pond to the side rather than center it was deliberate. Discovery is part of the experience — the Pond rewards those who take a moment to explore the Inner Ring on foot.

Apple Park’s Unofficial Town Square

Caffè Macs is Apple Park’s unofficial town square: a central gathering place where everyone comes together. By locating the kitchen underground, the restaurant is able to offer an astonishing 55,000 square feet of indoor dining space across three floors.

The Caffè Macs team serves 12,000 meals every weekday — all prepared on-site using healthy ingredients and featuring a wide variety of cuisines. The third-floor walkway offers spectacular views of the Inner Ring.

Indoor, Outdoor, and Everything Between

Caffè Macs is flanked by outdoor dining terraces on both the inner and outer sides of the Ring Building. In warm weather, massive floor-to-ceiling glass doors open to transform the Caffè into a semi-outdoor space.

The retractable doors are large enough for a long-haul jet to pass through — yet despite their size, they open in just eight minutes at a noise level of under 40 decibels.

Orchards, Gardens & Lawns

Fruit trees border the outdoor dining terraces, alongside generous plantings of sage and rosemary. The bounty from these orchards and gardens is harvested and used in meals served at Caffè Macs.

On both sides of the Caffè, expansive lawns provide casual gathering spaces — places to sit and talk, catch a concert, or join a game of frisbee on a warm afternoon.

Indoor & Outdoor as One

When the giant glass doors retract, Caffè Macs seamlessly transitions between inside and outside — connecting the dining space with the terraces and Inner Ring parkland.

A Place for Everyone

From quick lunches to long conversations, Caffè Macs is designed to be more than a cafeteria — it’s the social heart of Apple Park, where cross-team connections happen naturally.

Where Big Ideas Come to Life

Situated at one of the highest points on campus, the Steve Jobs Theater is where Apple hosts employee meetings and special events. Named in honor of Apple’s co-founder, it stands as a permanent tribute to his vision, craft, and legacy.

The Theater’s circular upper lobby features glass walls that offer a beautiful, uninterrupted 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape and the main Ring Building. Below it, the 900+ seat auditorium is entirely underground — hidden beneath the hillside.

A Record-Breaking Structure

The lobby’s 22-foot tall curved glass panels support a Carbon Fiber roof weighing more than 80 tons — the largest all-glass supported structure in the world. The design conceals all structural cables within the joints between the glass panels, resulting in a seamless, uninterrupted glass surface.

The Descent

Guests make their way from the glass lobby down to the underground auditorium via a pair of graceful curved limestone staircases. Alternatively, a spiraling cylindrical glass hydraulic elevator — large enough to enter from one direction and exit from the other on the floor below — provides a uniquely theatrical arrival.

The Limestone Staircases

Two curved staircases crafted from natural limestone sweep guests down into the auditorium, framing the descent as an experience in itself.

The Glass Elevator

A spiraling, cylindrical hydraulic elevator made entirely of glass — entered from one side and exited the other — is one of the most unusual and memorable details in any Apple building.

A Tribute to Steve Jobs

Designed by Jony Ive, the Rainbow was built for an employee event to celebrate the opening of the campus and pay tribute to Steve Jobs, whose vision made Apple Park a reality.

The idea of a rainbow immediately resonated with Jony and the design team. The rainbow logo has been part of Apple’s identity for many years. And a rainbow is also a positive and joyful expression of the value we place on inclusion and diversity. From an aesthetic design point of view, a semi-circle relates beautifully and naturally to the form of the Ring Building.

Today, the Rainbow has become a signature feature of the campus and a wonderful backdrop for outdoor events at the Park.

A Campus Icon

What began as a centerpiece for the campus opening celebration has become a permanent and cherished feature of Apple Park — a favorite meeting spot, photo backdrop, and symbol of Apple’s values.

Steve’s Vision

Steve Jobs dreamed of a campus that would inspire its people every single day. The Rainbow stands as one of the most visible expressions of that vision — joyful, inclusive, and unmistakably Apple.
